Ten students participated in a 14-day programme which was called Canada Culture & English Summer Camp organized by CCCEA. They had English lessons at TRU (Thompson Rivers University) and various activities in Kamloops such as horseback riding, kayaking and rock climbing and so on. They stayed in different host families experiencing the Canadian cultures which made this trip fruitful and memorable.

Students’reflections

Before I go to Canada, I feel so nervous because I worry that my English speaking skill is not good enough to talk with the host.
In this trip, the most challenging for me is speaking English at every moment. After a few days, I became accustomed to speaking English every day. I tried my best to speak English clearly with my homestay.
I think the most unforgettable thing is that the Canadians are very approachable no matter if they recognize you or not. They also greet you cordially. I then tried imitating their behavior and said ‘hi’ to some people on the street actively.
The most treasurable thing for me is my host family. They are very nice. They always told me the history of Canada and even took me to the monument of the world war. They also cooked a lot of yummy food to me. Besides, they had great patience to listen to me even though my English was not very fluent.

The most unforgettable experience is that my friend and I had a chance to stay with the host family in Kamloops. I travelled a lot but I had never stayed with the host family for 12 days. My host family is very nice and they are kind and funny. They liked telling jokes and bringing us around, creating a memorable experience with them!
For me, the memories in Canada are treasurable and impressive! I will always remember!

After joining the summer camp, I become brave. For example, we went kayaking. I was too scared therefore I didn’t try at the beginning. Some instructors suggested that I should try because it might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Besides, some students said they felt excited after trying it. At last, I decided to try and I also felt the same! I wanted to go kayaking again. I was amazed that I conquered the fear.
In addition, I stayed with my dear host mum, Marian. I was extremely grateful for her. Thank you for her taking care of us in those 12 days. All of us miss her so much. The summer camp gave me a lot of precious memories!

After going to Canada, I have learnt an important thing—courage. This is my first time to visit a place with an English speaking environment. Therefore, I was quite scared. When having some activities such as horseback riding and rock climbing, I was not only nervous but also frightened. But my instructors always encouraged me to be brave and try my best. Interestingly, my horse was called Faith. Finally, I tried and I found them exciting. For rock climbing, I had tried so many times before I succeeded. This tour trained me to be more courageous to try something new.
Ko Lok Yi, Katrina (3E)

I tried lots of activities in Canada that I have never tried before such as kayaking, indoor rock climbing, etc. Also, the lessons with the teachers were very impressive as there were a lot of differences between Hong Kong and Canada.
Besides, the most memorable thing is the time with my host family. As we know, it is very easy to feel uncomfortable while staying in another country. However, my homestay spent a lot of time with us. We talked a lot and sometimes cooked together. Therefore, I could get used to the life there quickly with the hospitality of the host.

During this trip, I had lots of unforgettable experience with my homestay, Marian and my friends. The most impressive thing is the environment in Kamloops. Unlike Hong Kong, there are no skyscrapers but lots of cars and various types of houses. The weather is hot but not humid. I really enjoyed and felt relaxed when I stayed in Kamloops.
We went on a picnic with Marian and I discovered that Canadians really know how to enjoy their life. Many of them always have family gatherings.
I am so grateful to have this valuable opportunity to participate in this trip.

After joining this camp, I have become more independent, self-disciplined and confident in speaking English. It is because I need to speak English during the lessons in TRU and to communicate with my host family every day.
Besides, it was interesting and fun to do kayaking because I could enjoy a lot of beautiful views and breathe some fresh air during kayaking. Moreover, the water was particularly clear, just like a mirror.
I had a wonderful time in Canada staying with my caring host family. Everything is amazing and memorable. Thanks my parents for giving me a chance to experience different cultures in another country.
Lui Wing Yin, Miki (3E)

Before going to Canada, I was so nervous about that because my English is not very fluent. It is a challenge for me to talk with others using English. But after staying in Kamloops for two weeks, I discovered that what I worry about is not a problem.
My host family is kind and they took good care of me and my friend. The teachers in TRU also encouraged me to speak English and try. Now, I have surmounted all the difficulties. It is an amazing trip for me and I hope I can join more study tours or exchange programmes next year.
Ng Yau Sang, Tim (3E)

I am missing Kamloops so much. It is very different from Hong Kong. I love the lifestyle there. There are no tall buildings and l can enjoy the spacious environment with beautiful views.
I learned a lot of English words every day and my English speaking skills are improved a lot. My host mum even came to school to listen to my presentation and she said that was a great one.
It was a valuable experience to me and I got impetus to study harder in the future.

This trip is memorable to me.
When I came back to Hong Kong, I missed my homestay very much. Although we had just stayed together for two weeks, we had a lot of good memories. My host family kept showing us the wonderful views and cultures of Kamloops which made this trip unforgettable. I cannot wait to visit Kamloops and my homestay again.
