This year, we were delighted to have 14 students visiting the AFS Intercultural Fair. With exchange students from various countries introducing the unique lifestyles of their homelands, students got a valuable opportunity to interact with foreigners in English while learning about international cultures. Tasting local food, playing traditional games, learning different languages and cultural dances are only some of exhilarating activities students enjoyed at the fair.

The 28th of November was an amazing day because Mrs. Barry, Miss Wong, my classmates and I went to Kowloon Tong to attend the AFS Intercultural Fair. At the AFS fair, we did intercultural exchanges and learned about different countries’ cultures, geographies, languages and their local foods.
On that day, we went to classrooms introducing Germany, Mexico, Finland, Thailand, Brazil, Japan and Switzerland. For example, Switzerland’s local food is chocolate. Brazilians like playing football and dancing the Samba. Mexicans are enthusiastic about life and Finland has Santa Claus Village. The persons who taught us were all exchange students. Their ages were very close to us so we communicated easily. The exchange students were very nice and enthusiastic. I admire them so much. Also I took a lot of photos with them. That day we tried many different countries’ local food and played their games. It was so fun and exciting. The intercultural fair gave me a taste of intercultural learning. It made me immerse myself into a foreign country. It was so awesome.
If next year I have a chance, I will make sure to join it again. Because it was really fun and let us learn more knowledge about different countries.

On the 28th of November 2015, the 12th AFS Intercultural Fair was held. This year we had several countries, which were represented by over 60 students and inhabitants. We had countries from 3 continents and over 1400 visitors at the fair. The country representatives taught traditions or language, played games or brought food for their visitors.
I had the pleasure to represent Germany with my friends. We got our own classroom, which we decorated to look as German as possible. All four of us were very excited but a little nervous, because we thought we might not have enough creative ideas to entertain our guests long enough.
But when we received our first group of visitors we became quite confident, because every one left our room with a smile on his face.
Luckily, many groups found their way to our room. It was sometimes very busy and noisy, but I had also met a lot of nice people.
I was very proud that Germany got the second place in the ‘Favourite Country’ Competition. But for me the best thing was all the people that I had met, for example the people from the Pakistan and Nepal rooms and all the visitors I had time to chat with, especially my schoolmates and fellow English Ambassadors.

That day was 28th of November 2015 on a Saturday. That day morning, Mrs. Barry, Miss Wong and the English Ambassadors who would like to attend the AFS fair went to meet in Kowloon Tong MTR station. When all of us arrived, we walked to the fair together.
The location of the AFS fair was really huge, after arriving, the volunteers gave us a pack of stuff. The pack had an information booklet about the AFS programme, and a small ‘passport’. Then we divided ourselves into different groups.
My friends and I went to a classroom introducing Germany first. Next, we went to the Mexico classroom. We met a boy who is from Mexico. He asked us to try some local food however I did not try it as it was spicy. After that, we went to Finland and played some interesting games. After the games, they also offered some local snacks for us. The snacks looked just like the breakfast we would eat every day. The texture was like a biscuit but had some butter oil on it.
Next, we moved to Thailand, there were two girls who were from Thailand. They taught us how to say “hello” in Thai and the special thing was that there is difference between boys’ and girls’ ways of speaking, and now I know it.
Then, we travelled to the Germany classroom. This classroom was famous because a lot of girls said that there was a really handsome guy, so we wanted to know who the handsome guy was and how handsome he was. Oh my goodness! He was Nico, the German exchange student in our school. Nico played games with us, and we had held a heavy cup of water to represent what German women in the traditional beer festivals need to carry. It was extremely heavy!
Then we also went to Brazil, Japan and last but not least, Switzerland. We had gone to a lot of countries and learned about their local cultures. It was extremely cool, fantastic and wonderful. I hope next year we will also have activities like this, in which we can learn things and improve our English speaking skills in a fun way!

Today was a really wonderful and nice day for me to broaden my horizon.
I went to classrooms about Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy and Turkey. I love Japan very much. The girl introducing Japan in the classroom wore the kimono. It was beautiful and lovely. I also took a photo with her. But the most memorable times were when I visited the Spain and Italy classrooms.
When I visited the Spain classroom, they taught us Spanish but I have already forgotten it, ha! Next, they told me and my friend, Kelly, that their country is popular for gymnastics. Therefore, if we could do this we could get a prize. Other school students invited us to do with them. Of course we agreed!
Finally, we won the prize! It was candy!
In the Italy classroom, they taught us how to dance. It was really funny. They also played games with us! The game was ‘train through cave’. Two people made a group and held hands. Each group stood next to another group. Group one went through the ‘cave’ and held their hands. When they finished, group two also went through the ‘cave’. When the groups held hands but lowered their arms, I thought, “How to go through it?”
It was very exciting for me!
Finally, I went to the ground floor and took photos with Kelly. I used the props provided - round glasses, the feather scarf and the beard - for taking photos with the Instagram frame.
I met many people today, and learned other countries’ cultures. It was a really nice day!
