AFS Intercultural Fair 2016

更新日期: 24/02/2017

AFS Intercultural Fair 2016 was successfully held on 26 November at Maryknoll Fathers’ School. This was a unique intercultural learning event where over 40 foreign students from 15 countries shared their culture with more than 1,000 students from over 70 local secondary schools. This one-day event allowed local students glimpses of cultures from Sweden to Thailand. We were delighted to have 8 English Ambassadors visiting the AFS Intercultural Fair this year. Students had a chance to interact with exchange students from various countries. During the visit, our students learned different cultural aspects of these countries. They also tried out their food, played their games and joined the folk dance. This unique experience at the fair helped them gain a better understanding of how differently people live around the world. Indeed, such fairs like AFS Intercultural fair help students step out of their comfort zone and explore themselves.

Ken Lo, from class 3E :

On 26 November,2016, I visited the  AFS Intercultural Fair with my classmates. We had great fun there and learned some basic expressions from new languages such as  Russian, Italian and Spanish. We also learnt about their traditions and customs. For example, the most direct way to say "hello" in Italian is "ciao" but there are actually multiple ways to greet someone.

In the Russian cultural classroom, we learned to count up to 10 in Russian. It's hard to find a symbol of Russia more popular than the traditional Russian nesting doll. These decorated wooden dolls "with a secret" are also called matryoshka dolls or babushka dolls. I found these Russian nesting dolls very original and unique.

There were other schools coming to the AFS Intercultural Fair as well. We all enjoyed the fair. It was also nice to meet and talk to other students from local secondary schools. I had a really good time at the fair and this really helped me broaden my horizons and raise my intercultural awareness.

Haley Wong, from class 3D:

On 26 November, we visited the AFS Intercultural Fair, which was held at  Maryknoll  Fathers’  School .
Firstly, we went to the Italian cultural classroom. We learnt some daily useful words such as various forms of greeting and numbers, for example, “ciao” ( hello), “baci” ( kiss) and “uno” (one). Also, we played the “music chair”  game with  students from other schools, which was really fun!

Then, we went to the German cultural classroom. The exchange students from Germany taught us some basic German words in order to play a funny game with the rest of the audience. Basically, we had to say food vocabulary in German such as  “schokolade”  and  “gummibarchen” and then jump and catch these food items.

Next, we learnt more about the Spanish culture. We gained valuable insight into this fascinating culture by getting to know more about bullfighting and traditional dances of Spain.

Finally, we dropped by the Russian cultural classroom. We learnt a few new words  in Russian, for example, “poka” (bye ), “dva” (two) and “syem” (seven).  Then, we played   the “blind chick” game, which was very exciting.

Boris Leung, from class 3E:

I really enjoyed most activities at the AFS Intercultural Fair and I found them very meaningful and useful for our intercultural learning experience.  What I realized is the fact that getting used to another culture is not difficult. There are several opportunities to get to know other cultures and languages in Hong Kong. For this reason, you don’t have to travel outside Hong Kong as everything is at your fingertips. The fair is also a good platform to meet some interesting people and make friends through exploring various cultures.
